Abstract

This book sits at the intersection of three, interconnected, fields of study. First it offers a contribution to the emerging engagement of human geographers with the politics, economics and cultural meanings of the atmosphere (see Adey et al., 2011 and McCormack, 2009). Second it applies Foucauldian theories of governmentality to a study of the evolving practices of air governance in the UK (Agrawal, 2005). Third, it utilises the insights of work within the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge in order to interpret the role of technological objects, and human actions, in the production and consolidation of scientific insight (Shapin and Schaffer, 1985).
