AbstractThis interim report summarizes findings from NYCCAS air monitoring during the winter of 2008-2009. All four pollutants included in this report — fine particles (PM2.5), elemental carbon (EC), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) — varied two-fold or more across the NYCCAS monitoring sites within the city. Research has linked each of these pollutants to adverse health effects, especially in individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. NYCCAS data quantify, for the first time, the extent to which some areas of the city may have higher average pollution levels than other areas. Higher concentrations tend to occur in areas where fuel combustion sources — especially emissions from on-road vehicles and buildings— are more abundant.
